In January 1966 I got to meet the Who when I was a member of the support band at one of their shows. The Who had two top ten hits in 1965 with ‘I Can’t Explain’ and ‘Anyway Anyhow Anywhere’. Throughout 1965 their popularity was on the rise and they made regular appearances on ITV’s ‘Ready Steady Go’and Top Of The Pops. In November that year they entered the charts with ‘My Generation’. On 7th January 1966 the Who played at a venue called Mister McCoys in Middlesbrough. They put on a great show for the hundreds packed into the club that night. John Entwhistle wore his famous Union Jack jacket. Keith Moon wore a white T shirt bearing the word “POW” with “Dave Berry” in a smaller text below. After the show we spent an hour or so hanging out with the band in the dressing room during which time I ended up with Keith Moon’s sweaty T shirt as a memento of the occasion.
I like to tell people Blur was my first live gig (I fear that Five beat them to the bush, by about three weeks – I was just accompanying a friend, honest!) But Blur was definitely the first gig I loved, the first gig I sweated at, the first gig at which I bought a knock off t shirt on my way home.
I remember going with my brother and cousins, and going on my cousin’s shoulders, and being so excited to see Damon et al on stage and then queuing for the tube home and buying this t shirt. I then wore it for most of the next two years, cutting the neck and sleeves off of course.
